Machine Operation
Fabio Leonardi electric tomato milling machines come with specific instructions and tips for use. Each unit includes a printed manual with assembly and cleaning instructions. The manual is also linked at the bottom of this description. Fabio Leonardi provides the following preparation and processing tips for tomato milling:
- Begin by removing the leaves and stems from the tomatoes. Place a handful of whole, uncut* tomatoes in the top SP hopper (bowl). Before turning on the machine, coat the spiral with olive oil. Place one bowl beneath the screen chute to catch the seeds and peels, and a second bowl beneath the tip of the screen to collect the processed tomatoes.
- Move the switch to position “I” to turn on the machine. Guide the tomatoes through the hopper using the supplied pusher, and keep tomatoes in the hopper while the machine is running. Do not run the machine empty. If desired, run the processed tomatoes through the machine a second time to extract more tomato pulp. The machine separates the tomato pulp and juice from the skin and seeds. You can preserve the processed tomatoes for later use or cook them to a thicker consistency to make tomato sauce.
Unique Fabio Leonardi Feature: Gasketless operation. Most tomato milling machines use a gasket between the screen and the body of the processing head. Over time, gaskets can dry out, crack, harbor bacteria, and require replacement. Fabio Leonardi machines eliminate the gasket. Instead, the chute captures juice that flows through the threads of the screen attachment.

Cleaning and Maintenance
Do not run the machine empty. After use, wash all six easy-to-disassemble parts with water and mild detergent, then dry them thoroughly. Coat the metal pieces with olive oil before storing them. The spiral is designed to scrape against the inside of the stainless steel screen, trapping the tomatoes against the screen as the spiral narrows. Because the spiral is cast, some imperfections may wear off as metal shavings during the first run. For the first run, use stale bread or older tomatoes with olive oil, discard the batch, and clean the machine. Please read the product manual linked at the bottom of the page for more details.
Accessory Compatibility
You can also use this machine as a meat grinder. Our suggested grinder attachment is the TC8, found in the related items. This attachment should allow you to grind an appropriate amount of meat without overworking the motor. You can also find sausage stuffers in the related items. They offer another way to prepare pork, beef, deer, or other meat processed through the grinder attachment.
About the Brand
Words from Our Pomodoro Residente Esperto di Premere (“Resident Tomato Press Expert”)
“The Fabio Leonardi MR0 is a great tomato miller for households with larger tomato gardens and smaller commercial applications. The MR0 has the same construction as other Fabio Leonardi tomato millers and is offered in both uncovered and covered versions.
The Fabio Leonardi MR0 features a 1/2-horsepower motor. The MR0 has the same mounting point as the MR9 and MR7 motor units. This is a great feature of the Fabio Leonardi line of tomato millers.
The MR0 can be paired with either the SP3 or SP5 tomato milling attachment. We recommend pairing your MR0 motor unit with the SP3 tomato milling attachment because its production level closely matches the motor unit’s output. The SP3 tomato milling attachment has a neck opening that measures 2 1/4 inches in diameter. Its screen measures 5 1/2 inches in length and 2 1/2 inches in diameter at the base of the tomato miller. The SP5 tomato milling attachment is slightly larger, with a neck opening that measures 2 3/4 inches in diameter. Its screen measures 6 3/4 inches in length and 3 inches in diameter. The SP5 tomato milling attachment was designed for higher levels of production.
Both attachments are made from cast iron and stainless steel. The tomato feed spiral is made from cast iron, and the tomato milling screen is made from stainless steel. During the first run of your Fabio Leonardi MR0, you may notice metal shavings in the processed food. This is due to the tight fit between the spiral and the screen. We recommend using old tomatoes or wet bread during the first run to capture the metal shavings, then discarding the batch. Before subsequent uses, lubricate the tomato milling attachment with olive oil because the tomatoes will not have reached the screen when you start the machine.
One unique feature of Fabio Leonardi tomato milling attachments is a spring that applies constant pressure to the tomato feed spiral. This helps extract as much tomato juice and pulp as possible from each tomato during processing.
You will also notice that there is no gasket between the tomato milling screen and the body of the attachment. Rubber gaskets can become contaminated or brittle over time. Fabio Leonardi designed the catch trough to sit beneath this connection and collect any juice that leaks out. When you attach the screen to the body of the tomato milling attachment, turn it counterclockwise. This helps counteract the rotational force of the spiral. As the spiral turns, it tightens the screen onto the unit.
Assembly of the Fabio Leonardi MR0 is simple. To align the driveshaft, leave the tomato milling screen loosely attached. This allows you to rotate the feed spiral into the correct position to align it with the motor unit. The locking bar on the motor unit must also be aligned. Once everything is aligned, insert the tomato milling attachment and rotate it upward.
The MR0 motor unit is also compatible with the TC8 meat grinder attachment. This meat grinder attachment shares the same construction qualities as the SP3 and SP5 tomato milling attachments.
The Fabio Leonardi MR0 tomato milling machine is a great choice for households with larger tomato gardens and commercial applications that do not require high production levels. Fabio Leonardi tomato milling machines are made from high-quality materials and have been built that way for nearly 100 years. TomatoMilling.com is dedicated to providing customers with quality tomato millers and canning accessories. Our knowledgeable staff is available seven days a week to assist you.”

Factory Visit
As a premier distributor of Fabio Leonardi products in the USA, I felt it was important to visit the factory and meet the people who carry on the company’s tradition of quality. I did just that in February 2007. I saw the different generations whose work traced the company’s 99-year history. Their passion and commitment to quality were impressive. The factory was modest and probably looked much as it had for the previous half-century. It stood not far from the center of Bologna, Italy.
I personally consider Bologna to be the culinary capital of the world, with the influences of Tuscany and the rest of Italy coming together in one place. The region’s passion for food may be why this company’s products are renowned worldwide for their quality and longevity. Originally, the company focused on local growers in Tuscany, helping them bring their harvests to market and transform the region’s tomatoes into its now-famous culinary creations.
That passion for food grew into a passion for quality that Fabio Leonardi passed down through subsequent generations. It extends to every aspect of the manufacturing process. His grandson spoke about the ideal temperatures and cooling cycles for castings, the careful selection of each type of metal, and the close monitoring of the machining process. Although some of the details were difficult for me to follow, his commitment to manufacturing quality was clear. By the time he described the finish of each piece, I was thinking about the café terrace where we would soon sip Chianti and enjoy lunch overlooking the valley below Bologna. I left assured that the tradition of quality behind this brand remained strong under its current management. |
